If you're new to the wonderful world of coffee you might not be familiar with grinding, arabica, blooms and all coffee lingo. We have put together a cheat sheet to get you up to speed!
Arabica: One of two species of coffee grown for commercial use. Arabica beans make up most of the world's coffee production & they are said to be higher quality than robusta beans.
Single Origin: Refers to beans that have been sourced from one particular place.
Blend: A blend is a mixture of two or more single origin coffees.
Green Beans: Unroasted coffee beans.
Light roast: light roasting does not produce oils. It is designed to make light, acidic flavors, and the beans are usually a cinnamon-like color.
Medium roast: this form of roasting produces a tiny quantity of oil, and the beans are usually similar in color to milk chocolate. Medium roast beans have more body and power than light roasts, but they are more delicate than dark roasts.
Dark roast: dark roasted beans produce substantial oil, creating bitter flavors with minimal acidity. The beans are usually very dark in color.
Grind: The lovely coffee beans need to be ground before brewing. Different brew methods have different grinds ranging from a course grind for French Press to a fine grind for Espresso. Its important the grind is right for the brewing method!
Espresso: A coffee brew method creating a concentrated shot. Water is forced though Finley ground coffee at high pressure.
Crema: The appearance of a dark, reddish-brown, thick foam with tiny bubbles on top of a freshly brewed espresso.
Extraction: extraction is the process of taking flavor from ground coffee beans.
Bloom Phase: A quick bubbling up of carbon dioxide and coffee grounds that occurs when freshly roasted coffee is brewed. You might hear this in V60 and pour over coffee brew methods!
Latte, Flat White, Cappuccino: Espresso based coffee drink with steamed milk.
